Two cutting-edge research projects led by the University of Limerick’s Centre for Robotics and Intelligent Systems (CRIS) have been awarded funding under the 2024 Research Ireland–Defence Innovation Challenge. The initiative, announced as part of a €3.2 million Government investment, supports the development of advanced technologies to strengthen the capabilities of the Irish Defence Forces.
Among the ten projects selected nationwide, two are led by UL researchers:
OVERSIGHT: An innovative detection system for maritime awareness, led by Associate Professor Gerard Dooly (School of Engineering), in collaboration with Dr. Alex Vakaloudis from Munster Technological University (MTU).
SeaDOM: A project focused on sea-surface and subsea object detection, led by Professor Daniel Toal and co-led by Dr. Edin Omerdic, both from UL’s Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering.
The funding will support the development of novel solutions in areas such as search and rescue, maritime surveillance, and the enhancement of naval operations.
