UL Research News published an article on Edin Omerdic’s research, Unlocking the Underwater Code – Dr Edin Omerdic’s OceanRINGS Software System Developed at UL allows for unrivalled precision control of Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) using mixed reality.

Dr. Edin Omerdic, Senior Research Fellow at the University of Limerick’s Centre for Robotics and Intelligent Systems (CRIS), has been at the forefront of underwater robotics innovation. His journey into subsea exploration began during his PhD in the UK, where he developed a novel algorithm for diagnosing and accommodating thruster faults in underwater robots. This passion for marine exploration has driven his career ever since.

In 2005, Edin started developing an innovative ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) control system, OceanRINGS. Designed to simplify complex subsea tasks, OceanRINGS incorporates cutting-edge navigation tools, control algorithms, and virtual reality technologies. Its dynamic positioning system enables even novice pilots to perform precise underwater maneuvers.

One of OceanRINGS’ standout features is its ability to synchronize ROV movement with a support vessel, enhancing the safety and efficiency of underwater surveys. The system’s adaptive path-following capability allows it to adjust to the movement of offshore structures like floating wind turbines in real-time, ensuring high-quality inspections.

Edin’s groundbreaking work continues to propel CRIS into new frontiers of marine technology, driven by a passion for pushing the limits of underwater exploration.
