Project Title: NETMAR – Networked systems for situational awareness and intervention in maritime incidents
Funding body: INTEREG
Duration: 01/03/2013 – 31/03/2017
Coordinator: LSTS
Partners: here
UL Team: Daniel Toal, Edin Omerdic, Gerard Dooly, Joseph Coleman

ABOUT
The project was organized around demonstrations led by the operational partners for 3 types of maritime incidents: harbour in the proximity of a metropolitan area, estuary and open sea. The goal, to optimize action for the 5 stages of these kind of incidents: identify, prevent and protect, prepare, respond and recover, is achieved by simultaneous air/surface/underwater observations with adaptive special resolution.
The three demonstrations in the NETMAR project:
- Shannon Estuary Incident Response Demonstration (17th and 18th of April 2013)
- Second Demonstration in Galicia (1st of October 2014)
- Porto Incident Response Demonstration (28th and 29th of May 2015)

CRIS (MMRRC) was in charge of the Shannon Incident Response Demonstration, called ‘Cathach’ held in April 2013. Oil spills are a significant environmental risk for oil and shipping industries. In the recent years a vast improvement in safety standards has been seen, leading to decreases in the numbers of accidents worldwide. However, when the spills occur, the prompt action is necessary to minimize the environment and livelihood effects.
The ‘Cathach’ exercise was a 2 day demonstration of oil spill response, demonstrating effectiveness of remote sensors, training personnel in the event of an real oil/chemical spill at sea and showing the importance of developing technologies and organizational structures that have the capability to respond to spill accidents.
